This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

We present a test for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Get comfortable with your partner and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like standard body horror, but inside Together exists a deep meditation about our choices in loving one another.

A Debut Feature Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a particular energy to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The story starts when the couple relocate from the big city to the country for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force takes hold of the couple. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together never makes Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

The couple face the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the ending inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu now.
