Our Premier Record of 2025: Rosalía's Masterpiece Secures the Number One Position.

Initially, this work could seem closer to a challenging scholarly examination than the latest pop project from an artist who just had a previous single featured an international K-pop star. Split across four different sections and sung in 13 languages, it is a head-spinning symphonic opus exploring feminine mystique, spiritual transcendence, and bodily transformation, frequently by way of the perspective of various women saints. The end of a love affair—a theme treated with grounded honesty on another major 2025 album—is launched upwards on this record, supported by the constant presence of a major orchestra and contributions from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter among an extensive list of collaborators. Its sheer audacity by itself renders the work of contemporary artists seem quite laughable.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

That this album manages to escape dry intellectual chin-stroking is nearly a miracle, with complete praise belonging to Rosalía. While this is not the first time project to fuse the past with the present, its scale are much higher here, with the tightrope walk more pronounced. The element that truly elevates this fourth album, outside of its multilayered melodies, rich compositions, and inherent drama, is an essential sense of playfulness. Much like the legendary artist during her peak, you find a wondrous quality to Rosalía's singing which sweeps the listener into its whirlwind. When she is tearing your heart in two, the listener still want to stay right there for the ride.

A Signature Example of Joy

That playful energy shines clearly during the stirring Italian ballad inspired by a saint. It bathes in a string-drenched melancholy for several minutes. Suddenly, all the music drops silent, and there's a spontaneous laugh and a comment prior to a hilariously exaggerated string crescendo thuds down like comedic impact. The song then shifts into the wild single driven by galloping orchestration, an imposing choir, and a surprise appearance from the artist herself.

"The charm with this album is that you never quite understand—or even wish to predict—what it will go to next."

Nearly every song concludes at a completely distinct point than how it started. One moment examines the fleeting nature of celebrity with a delicate orchestration before disintegrating into electronic cacophony. Elsewhere, a cut that recalls the artist's earlier trap-infused work begins off dark and sinister, with prowling beats, before fluttering flamenco rhythms and a heavenly chorus arrive to soften its rough corners.

The Balance Between Experiment and Accessibility

Another crucial balancing act on the album involves navigating the line between radical experimentation and broad accessibility. It is little surprise that the album has achieved her highest-charting work to break into the Top 5 of key charts: its heart contains a collection of truly undeniable hits. One track performed primarily in the English language builds on a refrain that seems to gather increasingly infectious hooks as it spins upward. This feat is echoed on a different powerful track that expands and constricts, weaving layered tunes like a complex tapestry.

  • A dance-infused song seduces via its jaunty, theatrical flair and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares with pop culture honesty of contemporary heartbreak anthems, lambasting a former partner labeled an "emotional terrorist".
  • Across these tracks, the vocals have a painted-on edge, akin to a fairy-tale character concealing a knife: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You have won the trophy of letdown."

A Maximalist Feast for the Soul

Lux represents pop on a grand scale, a hungry grasp for capital-A artistry in an era of impending artificial blankness. It rejects solipsism in favor of sublime elevation, creating an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully manages its built-in ridiculousness. This is a deep well of buried treasure that takes time to completely explore but never feels like a chore. Where other major pop albums of 2025 seemed like a meager meal, this record is a lavish feast at which the guests at the table, perhaps tipsy on holy drink, flit from discussions about historical saints, the profound feeling of soul-shattering sadness, and shared stories about hopeless men. It is a contemporary theatrical production from music's truly endlessly creative practitioner.
