Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and given more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.

This included seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the magistrate said information from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a legislator, called for a assembly of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on online platforms on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or watch it all from your phone there on your sofa? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's ruling was the chance of the former president's transfer to embassies near the home, considering that the probes revealed a background of arranging to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The court filing emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brasilia, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

Worldwide Consequences

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative US President Donald Trump, prompting him to impose a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being held in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will experience a imprisonment assessment on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with tracking devices.

They also petitioned that he be authorized to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he demanded regular treatment for lung conditions and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was found guilty of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the national vote to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plan which involved plans to murder the current president and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been managing the former president's case.

The plot was stopped because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the military leaders. The current president was sworn in without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, thousands of his followers attacked and damaged government buildings in the federal district, Brasília.

The law enforcement took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been provoked by him whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to take action, restore order and return him to office.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
