RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in hills just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several access tunnels leading to the depot... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," he added. "Including them were numerous British troops on duty over the holidays. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, following an assault killed two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
