At least 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” declared the national leader.

The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in public projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, defying forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked significant concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party called for an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic projects.
