A group of seven alleged members of German far-left organization face trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist group along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was behind targeting sites in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat from the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or are in custody.”
